All of them were taken from this world too soon.
After giving an amazing performance at a renowned event in San Diego on the evening of March 16, 1991, country music star Reba McEntire and her band were on their way back to their hotel when a heartbreaking tragedy occurred.
There were preparations made for the members of the band to fly out of Brown Field Municipal Airport and make their way to Fort Wayne, Indiana, for their subsequent performance.
Nevertheless, circumstances took an unexpected turn, and Reba, her then-husband and manager Narvel Blackstock, as well as her stylist Sandi Spika, were forced to spend the night in San Diego. Meanwhile, the band and tour manager boarded the first plane.
The second plane was able to take off without any problems and arrive at its destination without incident.
The first plane, which was only 10 miles east of the airport, met with a tragic end when it collided with a boulder on the rim of Otay Mountain, taking the lives of everyone on board.
Afterward, in a moving interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2012, Reba mustered an incredible amount of bravery to talk about the events of that night.
In the late hours of the night, perhaps between two and three in the morning, it was Narvel who returned to the hotel room where Reba was impatiently awaiting information. He carried with him the disheartening news.
Reba’s hopes were dashed when Narvel’s reaction to her inquiry regarding the health of their mutual friends did not inspire optimism. He responded with a gloomy “I don’t think so,” so spreading a dark cloud of uncertainty over the two of them.
They were seized by the need for information, and Reba revealed, with true passion audible in her voice, that “Narvel moved from one room to another, clutching a phone, desperately searching for answers.”
“It’s been 20 years, but the sorrow never really goes away,” she acknowledged. “However, I can imagine myself in that predicament. “Narvel was pacing aimlessly, wracked with excruciating pain.”
Reba McEntire discovered consolation in the continuous support of her close friends, especially Vince Gill and Dolly Parton, while she was going through a period of terrible loss.
As a result of the terrible event, these kindhearted individuals made an offer for their bands to finish the tour. Despite this, Reba respectfully rebuffed their attempts to be helpful.
Instead, she went on a personal quest for healing and poured her whole heart and soul into her subsequent album, which was titled “For My Broken Heart.”
The record was intended to serve as an emotional tribute to the bandmates that she had lost, as well as a moving monument to her undying love for them and an homage to their memory.
It is remarkable that “For My Broken Heart” has reached the pinnacle of success, since it has sold an astounding four million copies and debuted at No. 1 on the coveted Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
Reba McEntire honours the memory of people she has lost by paying tribute to them on the sad anniversary of the event that led to their deaths once every year.
She assures that their memory will live on through the use of social media, touching the hearts of her numerous followers along the way.
She marked the first anniversary of the accident with a heartfelt remembrance that she posted on Instagram in the year 2014.
Reba went on a moving pilgrimage to San Diego in 2016, the year that marked the sombre 25th anniversary of the disaster.
San Diego was a city that held a particular place in her heart and she wanted to pay her respects there.
She kindly shared this momentous trip across a variety of social media venues, giving her devoted followers an insight into the ongoing healing process that she is going through.
Reflecting on the passing of the quarter-century mark since the plane tragedy, Reba sent a personal letter that was quite touching.
She divulged, “Today marks the 25th anniversary of the fatal aeroplane crash.” In November, I went back to San Diego, and when I got there, I took a helicopter to the location of the terrible accident.
The strong sense that individuals who have passed away are aware of how much we miss them overpowered me to the point of tears. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with all of the families and friends who have been impacted by this terrible event.
